Citizen

I’m not going to write too much on this tonight, as I wait for the U.S. President-Elect’s speech, his Excellency the Honourable Barack Obama.

I’m not going to pretend I understand how one campaigns for two years. I campaigned for two months, and I know what that did to me. John McCain offered one of the best concession speeches I have ever heard, and to do so after campaigning that long I think has to give you a glimpse - a glimpse - into the world in which we are headed.

We are no longer citizens of cities, provinces/states, or nations. We are citizens of the world, with an ever-increasing interdependence on each other. I touched on this fact multiple times in the forums that I participated in. And so, for a nation whose very fabric was tarred with its past to overcome differences, come together, and to bring us to this moment should give all of us pause. As citizens of the world, we need to recognize how our ambivalance to the worlds’ problems can no longer be justified with, “well, that nation did it,” or, “that nation’s worse at it.”

Tonight is a wonderous moment to be a citizen of the world.

That it is, but for citizens of several U.S. states it’s also a terrible moment. Millions of people have been stripped of basic civil rights tonight.
