Congrats Gabe

My longtime friend, Gabe, who some of you know from his comments, has now successfully finished all coursework to get his LLB. Now he just has to pass the Alberta Bar, and he’s a full-fledged ambubance-chaser. Er, I mean, Lawyer. Congrats!

Prewrit Postmortem

Last night Gerry and I met at our usual spot to discuss the fact that the election is no longer happening this Spring and to go over the next year’s strategy. Much like every time I meet with my campaign manager, I got homework - but that’s good - he ensures that we’re on top of things and continually moving forward.

I’m taking next week off of work. I was going to take my vacation days during the election anyways, so I figured I’d take them this Spring and at least let me head clear a bit. Being on constant alert, not knowing day-to-day whether or not I’ll be campaigning, is very difficult on the system. Last Thursday, when it was clear that the Opposition parties weren’t going to pull a confidence motion out of their hats, and with the Gov’t House Leader not even trying to mention Bill C-30, the election-ready part of my brain basically went into hibernate. That night I actually had campaign dreams which kept me up all night (of course, it’s probably partially the beer at the Dome’s fault. Man that was a good hockey game. Too bad Calgary’s out, though).

Over the next few months, the Tories will be holding their *new* nomination meeting for the Riding. From what I’ve heard, Anders, Wakula, and a third are running. Gerry and I discussed whether I should run, since the odds of getting into office once you’re a nominated Tory is pretty high here in Calgary. In the end, as much as it would be politically opportune for me to do so, I think it flies directly in the face of what I’ve been talking about for the past year; The accountability I bring as an Independent is second-to-none. And, in the 40th Federal Election, I will run as nothing else than an Independent. It might not be opportune, but it’s the right thing to do.

Of course, with no election happening it means some of my momentum is lost. But that’s OK. Over the next few weeks I’m going to touch base with all the wonderful people who contacted me through my campaign site, as well as those who have been supporting me all along. Actually, it’s probably a good project for next week. What’s nice is that everything is ready for an election, so it doesn’t really matter from my standpoint when it’s called. I’ll still be here.

A positive externality that comes out of this, of course, is that I once again have time to write on the weblog. And about something other than elections (this post not included, of course). Expect this weblog to be busy in a few weeks again, once I’ve relaxed a bit.

I want to thank everyone for their continued support. I want to especially thank my wife and my family for bearing through lengthy election conversations over and over again. It’s been a long journey so far, and I haven’t even really started. Here’s to some weeks of relaxation before I have to worry again about, “Will it be tomorrow?”

Cool… enough to live on…

Planet found in ‘habitable zone’ of nearby star

Am I alone when I think… damn, I think it’s time for an interplanetary roadtrip. Of course, assuming you accelerate at roughly the speed of gravity for half a year, hit half the speed of light, and travel at that speed… it would still take you 41 years to get there… It’d be a one way trip. To possibly a planet with a hostile atmosphere. And a gravitational pull of 22m/s^2 (don’t jump off that hill… ahh!). But still!

Although something tells me I wouldn’t be allowed to go. I mean, if you’re going to start a Utopian Earth colony, the first thing you don’t want to send is a politician…

Delayed

Being Thursday, the Hon. Government House Leader described the order of business for next week. Bill C-30 is not on it, and he also did not answer the question of when it would be revisited for debate. In all likelihood, it will die on the Order Paper. Also, the Liberals’ motion on Afghanistan will not be considered a confidence issue.

The chance of a Spring election is pretty much gone. Obviously, I will continue with one ear to the ground, because I need to be ready for an election. But, I wouldn’t expect it until at least Christmas, although more likely in Spring 2008.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support.
