ICANN announces .ca.nation domain

November 29, 2006

Following Monday’s vote in the Canadian House of Commons where a motion passed to declare that the Quebecois form a nation within a united Canada, ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers released a new domain suffix to avoid future disputes over the use of the .ca domain for inter-Canadian nations.

The new .ca.nation domain will be available on January 1, 2007, starting with the already-reserved quebecois.ca.nation domain. Sub-level domains can be requested by the registrant of the top-level .ca.nation domains, if indeed the group requesting also form a nation.

Analysts believe that a subsequent series of sub-level domains will clog the tubes that make up the internets, adding that it will not be long before we see domains such as techsupport.IT.employees.[company].downtown.Calgarians.Albertans.ca.nation.

Disclaimer: the above was only a joke. Please don’t sue me.

umm, but it is a nation within canada, so really, we should be looking at nation.ca. But apparently that is reserved. nationWithin.ca is available though.

Yeah. Actually, prior to writing this, I looked to see if I could get nation.ca. I was then going to create subdomains like above and make a parody site out of it. Alas, it was not available…
